Description

Google Dictionary started off as a separate tool back in December 2009. Initially, the service worked with word definitions by Collins COBUILD Advanced Learner's English Dictionary. Then in August 2010, it switched to Oxford American College Dictionary.

The dictionary worked with popular languages such as English, German, Spanish and French.

Cause of Failure

In August 2011, Google Dictionary was discontinued as a separate tool and was integrated into Google Search.

Users could find a word using the “define” command in the search engine. That way, they would get the dictionary meaning of the word, pronunciation and usage examples, and an etymology chart.

The service is also still available in Google Translate whenever users handle single words. Additionally, it can be used as an extension for Chrome.
